To find the center of an image, click on the Background Layer and then choose Select>All, then Edit>Free Transform, then choose View>Show Rulers, and finally drag from the ruler to pull out a guide and it should snap to the center point of your image. When you've got the two guides you need (one vertical and one horizontal), press ESC to abort the transformation and then choose View>Hide Rulers.

To speed yourself up, use these keyboard shortcuts:

Select All: Command-A
Free Transform: Command-T
Show/Hide Rulers: Command-R

(Replace the Command key with the Ctrl key if you're using Windows.)

To change the measurement system used in the rulers, just double-click on any part of the ruler.

After placing a guide, you'll need to use the Move tool to reposition the guide.

Hold the Option key (Mac), Alt key (Win) to change the direction of a guide while you are dragging it (vertical to horizontal, etc.)

Hold down the Shift key to make a guide snap to the tick marks of the ruler.

You can also hold down the Control key while dragging a guide to prevent the guide from snapping to the object on a layer.
